History and Lineage
The first Wu’s Tai Chi Chuan Academy (鑑泉太極拳社) was opened in 1935 by Wu Chien-ch’uan (吳鑑泉祖師). The Academy headquarters moved to Hong Kong in 1949, and subsequent Academies were established around the world. Having operated continuously for over ninety years, the Wu family Academies represent the oldest uninterrupted Tai Chi lineage. The Detroit Wu’s Tai Chi Chuan Academy was opened in 1987 by the late Stephen Britt, a senior student of Wu Kwong Yu. Our senior teaching staff are also direct students of Grandmaster Eddie Wu Kwong Yu.
Philosophy and Benefits
The Tai Chi hand form routine is the essence of the art. Regular practice strengthens bones and muscles and moderates the circulatory system; these benefits are compounding. Tai Chi Chuan not only prevents disease but is an effective treatment for many existing illnesses, nourishing one’s vitality. Two-person “pushing hands” is the application of the art for health and self-defense, following the principle of neutrality. Applications are expressed through the subtle transformations between fullness and emptiness, using principles of leverage. Movements are purely natural, and long-term perseverance brings profound benefits.
Enrollment
Young and old from all walks of life are invited to enroll; anyone can study Tai Chi Chuan. Those seeking instruction must agree to follow the basic rules of the Wu’s Tai Chi Chuan Academy while training. Regardless of previous martial experience, new students must first learn the Wu family 108 posture sectional form.
