Our Institute’s history begins in July of 1987, when, at the invitation of Michigan area Tai Chi Chuan enthusiasts, Sifu Eddie Wu and four of his assistants, including Sifu Britt, visited Michigan to conduct a seminar on Tai Chi Chuan in Ferndale. The interest and receptivity of attendees greatly impressed Sifu Wu and Sifu Britt and it was decided to establish a permanent school in Michigan. Sifu Britt was put in charge of this project and in August of the same year taught the first formal class in a Masonic Temple in Birmingham. Since that time classes have grown to include more than thirty metropolitan Detroit locations through local area hospitals, community centers, senior centers, churches, schools and businesses.

Programs have been developed with western medical professionals in the areas of cardio-pulmonary rehabilitation, oncology, occupational therapy and specialized programs for specific health challenges such as Parkinsonism, diabetes, multiple sclerosis and autism.Over the years students from our Institute have demonstrated the art form representing the United States in tours of Hong Kong, China, Taiwan, Malaysia, Singapore, Macao and Canada.Independent of the international academy since 2005, numerous press articles and televisionappearances track our Institute’s growth and on our 20th anniversary our work with the Michigan community in cultural and social development was recognized and honored by State Governor Jennifer Granholm.
