What are Classes Like?

Back to General Public Information

We recommend for Beginners that they try and make two classes per week.

Wear comfortable loose fitting clothing and shoes without heels.

The beginning lessons involve learning the 108 movements of the “Hand Form” or “Chuan”. Attending twice weekly helps to reinforce the pieces you are learning and makes the memory work easier.

When learning the form the instruction is given one-on-one. You will be shown some parts of the form, then given time to work on them. Later we check the parts you have learned and if appropriate, give more pieces and the process continues.

Please, if you have health concerns, let the instructor know prior to commencing training.
Learning the form takes on average three and one half months if you are training twice weekly.
We strive to maintain a quiet and peaceful atmosphere for the students to assist in concentration, allowing each person to work undisturbed.

Overcoming daily stress is a large part of the reason for training Tai Chi Chuan. As a result we ask that people do not bring their daily problems and issues with them to class. This way everyone can leave the outside “outside” for their time in class.

The instructor should be referred to as “Sifu” (meaning teacher) when asking questions.

We do not permit provocative clothing in our Institute as this can be a distraction to those focused on training. As a result there are no shorts or tank tops allowed. As soon as possible it would be appropriate to arrange to obtain an Institute shirt or sweatshirt, to be worn with black training pants, the Institute’s standard dress.

Learning is difficult so we ask that other students not be interrupted or disturbed when training.

We do not allow students to bring their business pursuits into the Institute. Any student soliciting business for their own benefit in the Institute will be asked to leave.

No gum chewing is allowed while training.

Any student that has consumed alcohol will be asked not to train that day.

Derisive comments about other students are not tolerated, nor is gossip.

In general we are about two things at our Institute; learning Tai Chi Chuan and having fun.
